How to reach the iconic Porto Timoni Beach in Corfu

Overview

Corfu was our first destination as a couple outside Albania and it was filled with incredible adventures along the Corfu coast. Except for the bad tour organization, the rest convinced us to save the Greek island for another visit in the future. The most iconic spot we visited was Porto Timoni Beach. I believe if you have done some research on Corfu, the Panoramic view of Porto Timoni has caught your eye.

Agios Georgios, Corfu

In the Northwest of Corfu island in Greece lies Porto Timoni Beach which is a peninsula where the Ionian Sea has created two bays that can be perfectly enjoyed as beaches. The view from the top is even more charming than the beaches and it is worth it to drive there to enjoy it yourself.

How to reach it

Exploring Corfu by car

Depending on where you are accommodated on the island, the arrival at Porto Timoni Beach is different. The means of transport to go to Afionas, the closest location to the beach, are buses or rented cars.

Public transportation

The Green Buses connect the main cities in Corfu, the only public operator on the island and they work well between two big centres but the schedules for small towns are rare. We used them a lot during our visit but we lost a lot of time in between, waiting and travelling with them. On our next visit to move around, a rented car would be a better choice. Anyway, if you want to take the bus, at the website of the Green Buses two lines send you to Agios Georgios, the tourist area close to Porto Timoni Beach.

A7 Corfu – Agios Georgios (Pagon) – 4 Euro

S1 Sidari- Agios Georgios (Pagon) – 3 Euro

Look carefully at their schedules to plan the visit at the right time. After arriving at the bus station in  Agios Georgios (Pagon) it takes 5 km to reach Afionas, the starting point of the hike.

Car

Renting a car or even better driving with your car, is the best choice to explore Corfu.
Since the island stretches a lot from North to South, I would recommend exploring first North and then South of the island. We only explored the northern part of Corfu starting from Corfu Town and it was great. Bear in mind that the northern part has pebble beaches (except Sidari) and the southern part has sand beaches.
Getting back to our beach, start driving towards Agios Georgios and park at the parking space in Afionas. Try to go there as early as possible because it gets overcrowded quickly.
The cost of a rental car depends on the season. During summer, the high season the car costs between 70-100 Euro/day and in the low season 40-80 Euro/day. You should pay a small fee for the parking space.

Boat

If you are not a fan of hikes then in Agios Georgios are plenty of boats to rent to reach Porto Timoni beach. The ride takes only a couple of minutes and you can enjoy the place without hiking. A big disadvantage of the boat ride is not seeing the viewpoint of Porto Timoni Beach.

Paddling

If you are on water sports and enjoy having your own pace, then paddle to the beach but do not forget the suncream. We saw a lot of young people paddling in the area and it seems like a cool thing to do.

The hike

Agios Georgios, Corfu

Let’s explain the final point and my favourite of reaching the iconic Porto Timoni beach. First things first, the earlier, the better. The hill is covered with Mediterranean bushes and during the day there is no shadow and that sun can cause some real damage to your skin. Take with you the essentials such as water, suncream and a hat.

From Afionas to Porto Timoni Beach it takes around 30 minutes plus the time of photos and videos. The level is easy and the path is the only one that sends you to the beach. Prepare yourself to wait in line to snap that photo at the Porto Timoni Viewpoint, but it is worth it. The view is one of the best I have ever seen. During the hike, you can enjoy a new perspective of the Agios Georgios area. After 45 minutes you made it to refresh yourself in the waters of the Mediterranean.

The beaches

Let’s keep it real. The beach from the viewpoint was better. Our expectations were very high and we were a bit disappointed. Porto Timoni is a good beach but not as beautiful as I thought it would be. However, we enjoyed the rest of the day together, swimming, playing cards, eating and getting in that beach vibe.

During our trip to Corfu, Porto Timoni was a highlight and it deserves its place as a must-see on the island. I wrote the guide to help you easily reach the iconic beach of Porto Timoni and experience this unique place in the best way possible. Happy Travelling!
